ECHO: Around-the-Clock Telephone Support Service
ECHO is a dedicated telephone service offering round-the-clock advice and assistance, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is available to people who have been registered with the service who have a West Sussex GP.
The role of Echo
Many individuals receiving health or social care in the final months of life are supported by a range of services and professionals. This can make it difficult and time-consuming to know who to contact for the right help. Sometimes, it may not be clear which service is the most appropriate.

The ECHO End of Life Hub exists to simplify this process by providing a single, consistent point of contact. When a person’s circumstances or needs change, they only need to make one call to access guidance and support.
The ECHO team can provide immediate advice over the phone. If the issue falls outside their expertise, they will consult with other healthcare professionals, including specialist nurses and doctors. The team can also refer individuals to other services or guide them, their carers, or family members to suitable sources of support.
Individuals’ preferences and wishes are recorded in a secure electronic personalised care plan. This document is shared with relevant care providers—including GPs, nurses, social care teams, ambulance staff, and out-of-hours services—ensuring that everyone involved in the person’s care is aware of their decisions.
ECHO works alongside, rather than replacing, existing healthcare relationships such as those with GPs, community nurses, hospitals, hospices, or palliative care teams. Its purpose is to enhance communication and make access to care more seamless.
Who Can Use ECHO
ECHO supports adults aged 18 and over living in the Coastal West Sussex area, as well as older teenagers who opt for adult services. The service is available 365 days a year to individuals, their relatives, or carers.
Situations where ECHO may be contacted include:
- When there is a change in condition and guidance is needed
- When advice is required about practical support or equipment
- When seeking information about bereavement services
